A Special Installation of Uhlmann Giant Umbrellas - Bad Vilbel, Germany
The first written record of Bad Vilbel dates back to to 774 AD. Many generations seeking its healing waters have enjoyed the towns mineral bath since. Foundations of a Roman villa, a public bath and a large mosaic were unearthed testifying to its popularity in Roman times. The mosaic is on display in the spa gardens.
Ruins of a castle date back to the XII century. The "Burg" was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times since the middle ages and it is coming back to new life again. Expert restoration is taking place in the past few decades and during the summer months plays and concert entertain tourists in the central courtyard of the old castle. The romantic setting hosts over 700 people and they have to be protected from the sunshine as well as the sometimes violent summer thunderstorms.

Designing and building the cover over the stage and the seating area became a challenging job for Uhlmann e.k., as they were selected for the project out of ten competing firms. Eleven 5m x 5m StrongWind umbrellas are standing now in the courtyard connected together, providing not only continuous cover but infrared heating, speakers, dim able theatrical lighting, and emergency exit lights. All the wiring for the heaters and the lighting systems run inside the mast. The rim of the canopy is at the height of 12 feet. But how do you protect the forest of tall masts from lightning strikes? That was a special challenge that Uhlmann e.K. solved successfully. The umbrellas are to remain open throughout the season and maybe year around. Wind will not be a factor for the StrongWind umbrellas that passed storms gusting to over 50miles per hour, and prototypes of the 5x5 meter StrongWind survived all the snow and ice that the German winter could produce last year. With all the planning involved and the many technical innovations required, this is an "anything but standard installation " and Uhlmann e.k. is justly proud of its success.
